Presentation

Located on the north shore of Lake Geneva, the town of Vevey covers an area of 2.38 km2 and is situated in western Switzerland. The sixth-largest municipality in the canton of Vaud, Vevey is the capital of the Riviera-Pays-d'Enhaut district.

Enjoying a privileged position at the crossroads of major transit routes in the 19th and 20th centuries, Vevey was the center of important businesses, which ensured its prosperity and renown. In the 21st century, its industrial vocation gave way to a forward-looking concept: Vevey Ville d'images (Vevey City of Images), which has enabled the city to rediscover its former dynamism around companies active in graphics and multimedia. Intense cultural activity is underway, enhancing the appeal of a town renowned for its charm and beautiful surroundings.

An ancient town, Vevey was already in existence in lake-dwelling times and was later developed by the Romans. With the invasions of the Barbarians, Vevey became a fortified town in the Middle Ages. In 1257, it came under the protection of the House of Savoy, and then in 1536, came under the rule of the Bernese bailiffs.

Many French Protestants took refuge in Vevey after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, and contributed to the town's prosperity. In 1798, Vevey, like the rest of the canton of Vaud, was freed from Bernese domination and became an important town, thanks to its geographical location on the one hand, and its industries and hotels on the other.

With French as its official language, Vevey had a population of 20,155 on December 31, 2023, representing over 125 nationalities, including 12,134 Swiss and 8,021 foreigners according to canton of Vaud statistics . This gives a population density of 8,397.9 inhabitants/km2.

With global warming and climate change, climate protection is both a challenge and an opportunity that towns and cities are taking seriously. With this in mind, the town of vevey has adopted a climate plan for 2022, with the necessary actions to be implemented focusing on two areas: reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change.

Description

After Geneva, the Nourrir La Diversité project will be carried out by the town of Vevey. After many months of exchange and discussion with the Department of Sustainability, the municipality has adopted this project, which will run from April 2024 to December 2025, in collaboration with food culture days.

The Nourrir La Diversité project in Vevey will be divided into two phases:

  • An action research phase from April 2024 to March 2025, during which various activities are planned to gather information from local residents through interviews, meetings and discussions.

  • A feedback phase running from April to December 2025, which will consist of highlighting the discussions and opinions collected during the exploratory phase in a fun, visual and practical way.

During this period, we will be working in the field with Vevey departments, associations and neighborhood organizations. By participating in or organizing events (urban banquets, fairs, debates, animations...), information will be collected on the theme of accessibility to healthy, sustainable, quality food in Vevey through interviews, recording of testimonials, via the dedicated website and social networks. The data will then be processed and the results made available in a variety of formats.
